England’s World Cup Prep: Right-Back

Kyle Walker England

Continuing our series on the English Football’s team preparations for the World Cup in Russia this year, we take a look at the right-back position and see if anyone can challenge Kyle Walker for the starting shirt and who will be able to provide back up should they need it.

Kyle Walker is the man to beat.

Walker has been a mainstay in the national side for the past few years with little challenge to be honest. Pretenders have come and gone, namely Nathaniel Clyne, but none have been able to usurp Walker from the #2 shirt. So it’s fair to say that unless Walker picks up an injury between now and then he will be starting as England’s first choice right back!

Who else could be challenging?

Assuming the usual selection process of having two players for each position, it should mean that another dedicated right-back will be on the plan to Russia. Who are the contenders?

Kieran Trippier

The Spurs right-back has been in great form this season and has really shone in the absence of Kyle Walker at Tottenham. In fact, some might even suggest that the form of Trippier towards the end of last season was the catalyst of Walker being allowed to leave to go to Man City in the summer. I know Spurs fans were not too upset by his departure due to the reliability of Trippier and the addition of Serge Aurier from PSG (for less than half the price of Walkers fee)

Joe Gomez

Gomez has been called up to the upcoming squad to face Holland and Italy and when selected, he has put in good performances for Liverpool this season. Many Liverpool fans see Gomez as a more natural centre-back as opposed to a full-back and has been interchangeable with Trent Alexander-Arnold this season in the Liverpool’s side.

His chances of being selected for Russia this summer are low as a result of the lack of consistent game time.

Ashley Young

Ashley Young England

The Manchester United man has been in flying form this year and is arguably first-choice left-back at Old Trafford. His ability to play with both feet could see the United man book a seat on the plane as he can cover a number of positions, something which is quite handy in tournament football!

Walker & Trippier to get the nod!

When it comes time for Gareth Southgate to announce his squad in May, it should be Walker & Trippier on the plane to Russia! Ashley Young will probably get a seat too, but for a different position.
