2Bit Sports Game Of The Year 2017

Game Of The Year

I have been meaning to do this for the last two weeks but now that it’s Dec 31st I guess it’s my last chance! That’s right! It’s time for the 2017 2Bit Sports Game Of The Year Awards!

There is a slight caveat here. We are Xbox and Nintendo people at 2Bit, nobody here is a PlayStation guy. The is a PS4 in a room somewhere in the East Wing of the 2Bit Sports Compound but we rarely go there because it’s a long walk from the in-house KFC that also doubles as pub. This means Nier Automata, Persona 5, Nioh etc will not make the cut. However Horizon Zero Dawn will as we did play that one! These are OUR awards afterall. The games we played and loved, not the ones that “should” be in there. Enjoy!

10. Golf Story

Golf Story

This is a really unique title, one no major studio would take a risk on, but as I said in my review which you can find here

“Golf Story is a genuine delight. I loved it almost immediately. As I have said before, if you are on the fence with the Nintendo Switch just pull the trigger. The games are there and the density of genuine top quality titles is unbelievable. Buy a Switch, this is another hole in one.”

9. Call Of Duty: WWII

The year “boots on the ground” returned and it paid off both critically and commercially. It’s comfortably the best COD since the dawn of this latest generation of consoles. You can find my review here. More of the same next year please Activision.

8. South Park: The Fractured But Whole

It was always going to be tough for Ubisoft as well as Trey and Matt to make a better game than 2014’s Stick Of Truth but I believe they have done just that. TFBW is an incredibly funny and engaging title. Cartman is a riot as The Coon, it makes me want more of those episodes on the actual show. Nicky is currently working on the review and I am sure he will agree with its place in the top 10.

7. Sonic Mania

Sonic Mania has been awarded an 8.6 by IGN, a 9 by Gamespot and an Essential rating by Eurogamer. It currently sits at 86 on the review aggregator site Metacritic. To put that in context this game has a higher score than Rocket League. That is a big deal considering how poorly received Sonic games have been lately. A return to its 2D roots with its old mechanics is just what the doctor ordered.

6. FIFA 18

FIFA 18

Well, as I said in my review which can be read here...

“Overall FIFA 18 is an excellent entry into the series. It is comfortably the best FIFA game ever made. This is a far more tactical entry. Do not lose the ball in midfield, you will be in trouble. A review that says any different just didn’t understand how to play it or doesn’t understand Football. Keeping the ball – Good. Losing the ball – Bad.”

This year FIFA was excellent but it didnt make the Champions League places here on the GOTY discussions. The competition above it is far too steep. These next five are all time, once in a lifetime, great games. If this was any other year it runs away with the title halfway through the season.

5. Cuphead

Cuphead

As I said in my Cuphead Review titled “I Love Cuphead But Cuphead Hates Me” this is not for everybody but it makes the top 5!

“Overall Cuphead is a fantastic game. It is a hugely unique take on the Run and Gun 80’s style arcade shooters, one I enjoyed playing and one I highly recommend…if you want to hate the world and everything in it.”

4. Player Unknowns Battlegrounds

PUBG

There will be no “Chicken Dinner” for PUBG here but 4th place in the final circle is one a hell of an effort. PUBG is an amazing game and the suprise package for 2017, it’s made by an Irish guy too! You can find my glowing review here, it features gushing praise like the below!

“PUBG is the antidote to the trend of developers inserting Loot Crates into AAA video games. 2017 was plagued by this practice, some more newsworthy than others. As mentioned above you spend your time “looting” houses for all kinds of items. If you kill somebody you can take from their loot. It’s a great design choice. No matter how poor your start may have been in a game you are always just one kill away from another players curated list of goodies. Wonderful stuff.”

3. Horizon Zero Dawn

I’m not sure I can give a higher better praise than the fact that I went and borrowed a friends PS4 just to play this! I’m an Xbox guy, a Nintendo kid, I have little more than a passing interest in PlayStation these days outside of a few titles. Horizon joins that list of titles and makes the top three in our GOTY! This is an excellent game where you fight robot Dinosaurs. What’s not to love? The story is great, the visuals stunning and once again just for the lads in the cheap seats – ROBOT. DINOSAURS.

2. Super Mario Odyssey

I don’t even know where to start but I will keep this brief. This is a game that will be talked about for as long as we discuss video games. It is an instant classic. I took a different approach to the review on this one, you can see it here.

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best games ever made. I was smiling the whole way through several sections of it’s campaign. The section at the end of the New Donk City level was a celebration that tied into the story. It came off like it was like a celebration for the Mario series in general. I’ll go one further, it’s like a celebration of video games as a whole. If Super Mario Odyssey was the last game to ever be made that scene would be a great way to go out. My jaw was on the floor, I couldn’t believe the creativity on show. Nintendo you beautiful bastards, never change.

1. The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

First of all, let me get this out of the way right from the jump. The Legend Of Zelda Breath of The Wild is the best game I have ever played in my life, and trust me I have played a metric fudge-tonne of games in my lifetime. I say this as somebody who has no previous love for the series. I played them, I liked them and I moved on as a satisfied customer. No complaints. Outside of Ocarina of Time and A Link To The Past I don’t think I went back to play any of them a second time. I have played through this twice while finding all of the 120 Shrines…twice. I am 300+ hours into this game and I have no reason to stop now that both DLC packages are out in the wild.

I think that when it’s all said and done history will prove this to be an important video game. As I said in my review/praise-athon

“In Breath of The Wild you can climb EVERYTHING. If you see something in the distance you can go there. Nothing is impossible. The game doesn’t hold your hand and tell you where NOT to go, they just kick you out the door of the Shrine of Resurrection and shout “Figure it out!”. After a short mini-tutorial area you are sent into Hyrule armed with little more than a tree branch.”

The environment is the game. How you learn to adapt is key to your survival and progress. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild is the world’s first truly open world game and I wholly stand by that statement. Fight me.”

ZELDA WINS!!!

Look, we won’t make any headlines by picking ZBOTW as the number one game of 2017 but it really is just that. Even the glorious Mario Odyssey could only play second fiddle to it.

If you like the list please do just that on Facebook! Also, share it with your mates before you head out on the town to celebrate the end of the year!
