Spurs came off winning the BIGGEST victory in decades in beating Real Madrid 3-1 at Wembley by stuttering to a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.
One of the biggest complaints aimed at Spurs over recent years is the apparent lack of depth in the squad to be able to cope with the tough schedule of the Premier League. Without making a massive amount of signings, the Lilywhites have been able to fill the gaps with able replacements and grind out impressive results.
One of the biggest revelations this season is 21-yr old Harry Winks. The diminutive midfielder was thrust into the limelight last month as injuries to Victor Wanyama, Moussa Dembele & Eric Dier forced the hand of Mauricio Pochettino. Winks was the star midfielder on show at the Santiago Bernabeu that also had Luka Modric & Toni Kroos on display.
He has show wisdom and experience far beyond years, with impressive displays against Real Madrid, Liverpool & Manchester United in the past few weeks. Many ‘pundits’ have predicted Winks to break into the England XI for the upcoming World Cup next year.
Who would have thought that Sissoko would have been as involved with the Spurs action as much as he has been so far this season? Not this guy and I’m delighted to be wrong. He has been immense whenever given a chance, always giving 100%!
The sight of Hugo Lloris straining his groin against Real Madrid last week had all Spurs fans’ hearts in the their mouths for days leading up to the game at home to Crystal Palace. The news was confirmed before the weekend that Lloris would not be available and so Vorm would start. Or would he? A knock in training meant he too was out!
Step up Paulo Gazzaniga! A summer signing from Southampton had been on the bench for a few games already this season when Hugo was absent. Spurs fans were not the most optimistic about this!
But after a Man of the Match display against Palace the court of public opinion have nothing but admiration for Gazzaniga! To be fair, he was solid as a rock! 3 saves that would make Lloris proud.
In previous seasons, and even earlier this season, Spurs have been guilty of not putting away lesser teams. Crystal Palace are a much better side than their league position suggests but are not at the same level as Spurs.
However, as teams sit back and play for a draw, Spurs have found it difficult to move the bus! Spurs can have up to 75% possession but as we all know possession means nothing if you cant make it count!
Previous champions of the Premier League have shown that in order to be in the shakedown at the end of the season, it’s the games that you win ugly will be what makes the difference!
If Spurs want to be a contender at the end of the season then it’s victories like this that will make sure they are there!
